Mobility budget not successful in Belgian companies

November 2024 - A survey by HR consultancy Hudson (part of Randstad Group) shows that only 10 per cent of Belgian organisations use the legal mobility budget.

According to figures from SD Worx, 852 companies offered the legal mobility budget in 2023.

This measure was introduced in 2019 as an alternative to the company car. The mobility budget allows employees to exchange their company car for a budget that can be used for environmentally friendly modes of transport, such as a subscription to public transport or a more sustainable car. Trading in a company car is most successful among employees aged between 25 and 35.

Although the legislature made some legislative adjustments to this measure in early 2022 - thus lowering the threshold - it appears that four in 10 organisations are still not planning to implement it, due to being too complex.

What is popular within the mobility budget, however, is its use by employees to finance a home loan or house rent. According to digital hr mobility platform Mbrella, in 2023, more than three in four Belgian employees (77 per cent) used the mobility budget for housing costs. In 2021 this was 45 per cent, and in 2022 52 per cent. The budget is also used for cycling (bike purchase, share bike subscription,...).

The Hudson Reward Survey also shows that average salary increases have returned to normal levels. The periods of hefty increases - such as an 11.1 per cent increase in 2022-2023 - are behind us. Today, the average increases are 2.5 per cent including the index and 1.2 per cent excluding the index.
